Mesa State Gets Big Grant For Solar Radio Station

Mesa State College's KMSA may not rank number one in listeners in Mesa County, but the alternative-format campus radio station has the unique distinction of being the first college station that will be powered by solar energy. Thanks to the efforts of Mesa State's We–CAN student environmental group the radio station receives today a check for 20–thousand dollars from the Shell Mahogany Research Project. One We–CAN organizer says the solar conversion is perfect for the radio station's eclectic choice of music, as alternative energy is perfect for an alternative radio station. A Shell spokesperson adds that the project is a good example of how alternative energy can be harnessed for a variety of purposes.
The solar conversion should be complete by May 2006. The panels are expected to save the station about 30–thousand dollars in electrical expenses over the 25–year life of the technology.
