Denver Bound Amtrak Train Derails Near Utah Border

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A truck driver is dead after his semitrailer was hit by a Denver-bound Amtrak train Wednesday in Southeastern Utah.

The train traveled about a-half mile before stopping after hitting the truck. It appeared the truck had been trying to cross the tracks in front of the approaching train.

The 26-year-old driver hasn't been identified. Five Amtrak passengers were hurt.

The crash derailed the front wheel of the train's lead locomotive and crews are helping re-rail the train so it can continue on to Denver.

An Amtrak spokeswoman says the California Zephyr is carrying 119 passengers from Emeryville, California, to Chicago through Denver.
