21 students selected for Young Entrepreneurs Academy

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) 21 students went through a rigorous selection process to be a part of the YEA! program, or Young Entrepreneurs Academy.

The 30-week-long course is designed to teach these students ages 10-18 everything they need to know in order to run a business at its conclusion.

And then they'll actually do it.

"They will create their own business," said Betsy Bair or the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce. "So they will learn how to do everything from writing a business plan, they will seek investors, have their idea funded, and then go to a full operation business. That's how they'll graduate."

Tuesday night was their orientation before the actual course gets underway.

Though the program is new to Grand Junction, it has been around for seven years now.

One student from Grand Junction will compete on a national level after the 30 weeks against other YEA! programs in the United States.

The winner is offered a $50,000 scholarship.

Last year's winner came from Texas, and he and the product he designed are going to be featured on an upcoming episode of the TV show "Shark Tank."
