State Misused Homeland Security Grant

Police, firefighters and other first responders may have funding taken away from them, if the state is forced to return one and a half million dollars worth of homeland security grants.

The United States Department of Homeland Security issued a twenty page report stating Colorado improperly used grant funds to purchase and remodel office space for an emergency-response center. If the state is forced to pay, Colorado lawmakers say they will have to take it out of future federal grants to local agencies.

Barbara Kirkmeyer Department of Local Affairs Director says the money may not have to be repaid if Colorado comes up with proper internal control guidelines and implements other recommendations.
