2005 was a banner year for oil and gas drilling activity in Colorado.
The number of drilling permits approved by the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission set a new record and surpassed the number of permits issued in 2004 by 50 percent. 34 percent of the more than 43–hundred permits issued last year were done so for the Piceance Basin here in western Colorado. This year is looking even busier,
the commission's director, Brian Macke says he expects approved permits to rise another 10 percent as natural gas prices remain high.
One of the major gas producers in western colorado Encana Oil and Gas USA expects its activity to increase 20 percent.
