Passenger Ship Sinks In Red Sea, Hundreds Feared Dead
An Egyptian ferry sank in the Red sea between Egypt and Saudi Arabia overnight, and as many as 1,000 people are feared dead.
The Al-Salaam Boccacio 98 went down about 40 miles off the Egyptian port of Hurghada an Egyptian authority says.
No distress signal was received from the vessel, which was sailing in heavy seas at the time.
A massive saearch and rescue effort is ubderway, with ships from Egypt, Saudi Arabia finding at least 20 bodies in the water, and 100 people have been rescued from lifeboats. Teh British Royal Navy are sending the HMS Bulwark to help, but Egyptian authorities turned down a U.S. offer of a P-3 Naval Patrol aircraft.
The ship is a ferry known as a "roll on-roll off" vessel, which is not known for stability.
