With burn season underway fire departments across the Grand Valley are busy Sunday fighting several controlled burns that got out of hand.
March 1st started the open burn season in Mesa County, which explains the numerous plumes of smoke throughout the Grand Valley the last few days. Farmers will burn acres and acres of dried grass and weeds, in order to clear their fields and reintroduce nutrients into the soil.
Permits are required to start a controlled burn, so that fire officials are aware of everyone who is participating. Permits can be obtained from fire stations or the health department. The season ends May 31st.
