A campground on the Colorado National Monument will soon reopen after being closed due to positive signs of bubonic plague.
The Saddlehorn Campground and nearby Canyon Rim Trail were closed in February after two chipmunks tested positive for the plague. Monument employees have been working with a National Parks Service public health officer from Denver, along with the Mesa County Health Department to address the issue.
Pesticide has been applied to kill all remaining fleas in the area that might be carrying the virus and the campground and trail will reopen Saturday, March 11th.
