Officials Discuss Affordable Housing Options

Dozens of officials from around the Western Slope hold a regional town hall in Grand Junction today to discuss successes and needs in meeting the demand for affordable housing.

Today's meeting of the Colorado Blue Ribbon Panel on Housing is a follow –up to previous efforts to create affordable housing on the Western Slope and Grand Junction. Among the problems still affecting affordable housing efforts are a better identification of needs and who has problems, and a recognition that everyone from city and county governments to the private sector need to be involved. Housing costs are 14 per cent higher in Grand Junction than the front range, and generally wages are lower, which one member says is the root cause of the problems here.

Today's meeting is the first in a series of nine regional town hall meetings held by the Blue Ribbon Panel on Housing, which is the result of a year's work on assessing the challenges and solutions to housing in Colorado.
