Washington (AP) Republican presidential candidate John McCain is floating the idea of picking a running mate who supports abortion rights.
In an interview with the conservative weekly standard, McCain admits abortion is one of the most important, fundamental issues of the Republican Party. But he also says the party shouldn't exclude someone from higher office just because they support abortion
rights. He used former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge as an example, calling him a social conservative on most issues, just not abortion.
McCain himself opposes abortion rights.
