Ballot Initiative To Deny Services For Illegal Immigrants Underway

A campaign to ban most state services to illegal immigrants is now underway. Defend Colorado Now kicked off a drive to collect 100,000 signatures to place the issue on November's ballot. However, only 67,829 valid signatures are needed to qualify for the ballot. Several hundred people began signing during a rally Thursday at the state capitol building in Denver. Former Governor Dick Lamm, gubernatorial candidate Marc Holtzman and former senate president John Andrews were among those in the crowd. Group member Waldo Benavidez told the crowd that illegal immigrants are driving down wages and hurting the American middle class. The Colorado Catholic Conference is among some groups organizing to fight the proposal. The conference, which represents the state's three catholic bishops, says the proposal unfairly targets a vulnerable population.
