The Grand Junction city council decided in February to give the fire department sole responsibility for ambulance service to start July 1st. Now that decision is being questioned by Mesa County commissioners.
Thursday afternoon city council members sent a letter to the Mesa County board of county commissioners expressing displeasure over an article appearing in a local newspaper earlier this week. That article mentioned concerns commissioners have about the city's decision to terminate services with American Medical Response, turning all EMS callls over to the city.
Those concerns center on reports that a city in Nebraska lost $2 million after taking over EMS services there. Rather than sending an internal memo between government entities, Commissioner Janet Rowland says she called the newspaper.
The county commissioners earlier affirmed a vote of confidence that the Grand Junction Fire Department could in fact take over patient transport services in a timely and efficient manner, but a final vote of support on the matter is to be taken by the commissioners next month.
Mayor Pro–Tem Gregg Palmer and Commissioner Janet Rowland both say this issue will not affect the relationship the two bodies have brokered over the years.
