Some Local Artists and School Students Recognized By NASA For Their Artwork Depicting The Sun

Some Grand Junction artists and school students were honored with awards for submitting artwork in a contest held by NASA. The international contest was held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. SOHO is an international project in which NASA and the European Space Agency cooperates to study the sun.

The subject of the artwork for the contest was the sun. The owners of Monument Art Glass in downtown Grand Junction, won first place in the adult category with their glass blowing artwork. Mike Calacino won first place in the elementary grade school category for his drawing of the sun.

Grand Junction had the most winners in the competition then any other part of the country. The artwork competition lasted ten months to commemorate the tenth anniversary of SOHO.
