U.S. Postal workers had double duty Saturday in the Grand Valley, not just dropping off mail, but also picking up non–perishable food items for local food banks.
During the last 14 years it's become a Grand Valley tradition that on one Saturday in May, U.S. Postal employees ask customers to place non–perishable food items at their mail boxes.
The food is weighed and distributed to seven area food banks and skyrocketing temperatures aside, postal employees say that Saturday's work while difficult, is well worth it.
More than 55 tons of food were collected last year during the stamp out hunger campaign and postal employees are hoping for an increase this year.
