SNOWMASS VILLAGE, Colo. (AP) -- Some trails in the Snowmass Village area are closing during primary elk calving season, so that cow elk who need to forage and nurse won't be startled or disrupted.

The Tom Blake Trail and Anaerobic Nightmare Trail, Sequel are closed until June 21. Government Trail (hash)1980 will close May 15 to June 21.

The U.S. Forest Service says the closures will protect an area that elk have chosen year after year for calving because of the water, food and seclusion available there.

Those who don't honor the closures could be fined up to $5,000.
