GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. – Three people were killed after their vehicle collided with a semi-truck on Interstate 70 near milepost 129 in Glenwood Canyon. The crash happened in a construction zone that left both eastbound and westbound lanes closed for four hours.

Around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, a 2006 Audi was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane when it collided head-on with a King Soopers semi-truck, according to Colorado State Patrol.

The driver, 17-year-old Brianda Zavala, was wearing a seatbelt. Passengers 16-year-old Jennifer Nevarez and 24-year-old Albino Ortiz-Monge were in the backseat not wearing seatbelts. They all died on scene.

The current road construction in Glenwood Canyon has shifted all Interstate 70 eastbound traffic into westbound travel lanes.

Peter Zhuchok, the 54-year-old semi-truck driver, was not injured. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but CSP says the roads were wet at the time of the crash.

The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, the Garfield County Coroner’s Office, the Gypsum Fire Department, the Eagle County Ambulance District, the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Colorado State Patrol all responded to the scene.
