New Program To Help With Jail Overcrowding

Make more room to lock up serious criminals. That's the goal of Mesa County's new Work–Ender Program.

Last weekend the first inmates entered the program at the Mesa County Detention Facility. Petty offenders who qualify are required to work at their regular jobs during the week and serve their jail sentences on the weekend doing projects and cleaning up for local non–profit and government agencies.

Inmates in the program worked at Royce–Hurst Humane Society and painted underpasses on Fifth Street. Inmates currently spend the weekend in the jail gymnasium but will eventually be housed in a building across the street from the Grand Junction Police Department.
