Gubernatorial Candidate Announces New Initiative

A Colorado Gubernatorial Candidate makes a stop in Grand Junction to announce an initiative aimed at protecting wildlife habitat in energy impacted areas.

Governor hopeful Bob Beauprez says his new Colorado Habitat Initiative will provide balance between energy development needs and the needs of wildlife. At a press conference Beauprez shared statistics about energy development. He says in 1996 there were 914 oil and gas drilling permits issued in Colorado. This year the state estimates more than 4500 will be issued a 500% increase in annual drilling permits. Beauprez says a "stop everything" attitude is not realistic and that's why he's calling for energy officials to work with him before it's too late for Colorado's wildlife.

As Governor, Beauprez says he would use money out of the Department of Natural Resources Operational Account to create a habitat mitigation fund to be used specifically for habitat enhancement and off–site mitigation in energy impacted areas.
