Fruita Landfill Transfer Station To Close; High Costs Cited

It already has some people upset, but the waste transfer station north of Fruita will close at the end of this year.

The decision to close the facility was made this summer by the Mesa County Board of Commissioners after being told it would be too expensive to keep the landfill open. The facility has been redesigned twice, but new regulations are making it financially impossible to keep open. Mesa County waste facilities manager Bob Edmiston says it would cost 250-thousand dollars to update the facility.

Edmiston adds that when the west valley was less-populated it made sense have a waste transfer facility at that location, but today private firms collect most trash, making the transfer station less necessary.

City of Fruita manger Clint Kinney says the city plans to send a letter of protest to the county in an effort to keep the facility open. The last day for operation is December 31st.
