An SUV travels more than one hundred feet off the road late last night killing the driver and seriously injuring a passenger.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, 28 year old Laura Zielke of Frasier, Colorado was driving her Jeep Cherokee down 26 Road just north of I ½ road. Zielke was apparently unable to turn as the roadway ended and she continued northbound traveling through the intersection.
The SUV skidded more than 80 feet and was then airborne for more than 50 feet before coming to rest in the bank of a canal which was drained but had ice in the bottom.
The woman was not wearing a seat-belt and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Mesa County Coroner's Office. Her passenger, 40 year old Michael Zielke, was wearing a seat-belt but suffered serious injuries and was transported to St. Mary's Hospital.
Authorities believe alcohol and excessive speed could have been contributing factors but the accident is still under investigation.
