Energy Department: Funding Drives Schedule

The U.S. Department of Energy says it's working hard to clean–up the uranium mill-tailings pile near Moab, and while the pile is bigger than they anticipated that won't affect the timeline of the project but funding could.

The project director says it's common for efforts like this to be bigger than expected. But the budget is really what drives the schedule. The DOE would like $28M a year in order to complete the project by 2028. The department is currently working on selecting a contractor.

The Energy Department plans to move the tailings 30 miles north to a lined pit near Crescent Junction. A train track already exists to transport the tailings and officials say they are hoping that the contractor they hire will do the job quickly and efficiently.

The Energy Department has requested $24M for the project in 2008.
