Parachute, Colo. (AP) A high school is locked down and Parachute police are asking for help from the county as authorities search for a gunman on the loose.

Police responded to a call regarding a domestic violence situation this morning, and learned that a man was seen carrying a 22-caliber rifle.

Officials believe the man is now in a field near Grand Valley High school, which is on lockdown, but the man apparently did not enter the school.

The school is on lockdown only as a precaution.

Residents of a nearby subdivision have been told via reverse 9-1-1 to stay in their homes and lock their doors, and other schools in Parachute and Battlement Mesa have been put on alert.

The Parachute Police department has also asked for assistance from Garfield County's all-hazards response team.
