School District 51 is the 10th largest in Colorado, but ranks last in the state in per student funding.
The state hands out roughly $6,000 per student in Mesa County, a ranking of 178 out of 178 districts.
The number one district, Silverton, receives about $14,000 a student, more than double.
With 500-600 students expected to enter District 51 schools annually during the next few years, the district is looking for sources which could lie with energy.
"It's time to shift the burden to the industry that's bringing growth to the area and that's the energy industry," District 51 Board Member Dan Robinson said.
Governor Bill Ritter has suggested freezing the mill levy across the state, which could mean an extra $2.5M for District 51.
