They're the first to arrive in an emergency and on Monday the Mesa County Commissioners gave local EMS workers a public pat on the back.
The board proclaimed this week as Emergency Medical Services Week.
There are more than 300 EMS workers in the county, half of which being volunteers who work other jobs but still answer the call when needed.
EMS workers consist of paramedics, firefighters, physicians, nurses and others.
