John Atchley's Body Discovered In Canal

A body discovered Tuesday morning in a Grand Junction irrigation canal has been positively identified as John Atchley, who had been missing since May 18th.

Atchley disappeared after attending a party in the 3000 block of Ellendale Drive. Some witnesses reported last seeing him swim across the canal behind the house.

For more than a week, Mesa County Search and Rescue, volunteers and family members scoured the canal where Atchley was last seen. On Saturday authorities drug the canal trying to find Atchley.

The Grand Junction Fire Department assisted the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office in recovering the body. The coroner's office has also ruled Atchley's death as an accidental drowning.
