Authorities Suspect Arson In Church Fire

Authorities are investigating a fire at a Grand Junction church and say they suspect arson.

Investigators believe someone intentionally started a fire at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Friday night.

According to the Grand Junction Fire Department, the arsonist may have used paper to start the fire near the church's alter. The building suffered smoke damage and some carpet and drapes were burned.

The arson is the latest in a series against the church. Last year the Catholic Outreach Day Center, which provides services for the homeless, was burned twice by arson.

Father Edmundo Valera says he hopes the Catholic church is not being targeted.

Anyone with information about this fire is asked to call Crimestoppers at 241– STOP.
