Police Department Goes Green With Electric Car

The Grand Junction Police Department goes green with its new electric parking enforcement vehicle.

Monday through Friday, Police Service Technician Grant Shawcroft can be found looking for parking violations. To help him out, the city recently purchased a new electric GEM car.

Parking tickets downtown are $10 to $15 a piece. If you don't pay on time it gets worse. Depending on the offense, the fine can double in just eight days and after 30 days you can expect to pay up to seven times the initial amount and an arrest warrant is issued.

Last year the city wrote more than 9,000 tickets and took in around $145,000. 476 parking tickets went unpaid in 2006.
