Fort Carson, Colo. (AP) Friends, family members and fellow soldiers are mourning the death of a Fort Carson soldier who died on the Fourth of July from injuries suffered in a grenade attack.
The Pentagon says 23-year-old Army Private First Class Steven A. Davis of Woodbridge, Virginia was killed Wednesday when insurgents attacked his unit. He'd been assigned to the 2nd battalion, 12th infantry regiment, 2nd brigade combat team, 2nd infantry division based at Fort Carson.
Davis enlisted in the Army in September 2005 and was serving in his first deployment.
Five members of the combat team died in a single incident, June 28th, the single most deadly encounter of any Fort Carson-based unit.
The brigade is locked in a block-by-block battle to rid the eastern half of Baghdad of insurgents.
