Two people are now confirmed dead in an early morning crash of a semi-truck on Interstate 70.

Shortly before 3 a.m. the semi-truck traveling west on I-70 hit the overpass at 26 1/2 road. The impact damaged a bridge pillar, and caused the bridge to sag about 8 to ten inches. Witnesses described explosions and what sounded like “a gun battle” shortly after the truck crashed.

At first authorities had thought one person had died in the crash, but records indicated two people were traveling in the truck. At a news conference this afternoon police confirmed two people died in the crash. Their names have not been released.

The crash closed the interstate for most of the morning. Around 11:00 a.m., one lane of eastbound Interstate 70 was re-opened. Westbound traffic is still being diverted off the Interstate in Clifton and onto I-70B. The Colorado Department of Transportation hopes to shore up the bridge and open one westbound lane by Thursday. They hope to have both eastbound lanes open this evening.

One person has been confirmed dead in the crash, believed to be the driver of the semi.
