Mesa County health officials have confirmed that an elderly woman passed away from the west nile virus.

The virus claimed the life of a 75 year old Mesa County woman.

This is the first reported death in Mesa County this year.

The county has now had a total of 16 cases of West Nile illness.

Of those cases, five people have had to be hospitalized. Those affected range in age from 11 to 79.

Health officials say while West Nile knows no age, the elderly are more vulnerable.

Last year there were 38 reported cases of West Nile Virus, two of those case were deadly.

So far this year the virus has killed five people in Colorado.
