RIFLE, Colo. (KKCO) Recently the Rifle Police Department has received several questions about use of the AMBER alert system. Any incident involving a child is very serious, and the AMBER Alert system is one tool used to resolve the incident.

In order to issue an AMBER Alert, certain guidelines must be met:

-- There must be a reasonable belief by law enforcement that an abduction has occurred.

-- The law enforcement agency believes that the child is in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death.Law enforcement must be able to very definitively show that the children are at imminent risk.

-- There is enough descriptive information about the victim and the abduction for law enforcement to issue an AMBER Alert to assist in the recovery of the child.

-- The abduction is of a child aged 17 years or younger.
