MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) -- The Grand Junction Police Department puts the county on accident alert after slick roads cause a number of minor crashes.

Accident alert means you should only call 911 if you are involved in an injury crash or if you suspect alcohol is involved in the crash. You must also report accidents that require towing services, involve city or government property/vehicles or are hit and run crashes.

GJPD spokesperson Kate Porras says the rain has turned to black ice on the roads, which is causing a lot of slipping and sliding as people drive their morning commutes.

She explains that the department wants to keep officers free in case of major incidents, if you are involved in a minor crash, do the following:

  • If possible, get vehicles involved off the roadway and moved to a safe location as soon as it's practical
  • Exchange driver’s license, insurance, and registration information with all drivers involved
  • Come to the Grand Junction Police Department lobby at 555 Ute Avenue during business to file an accident report within 48 hours of the incident
  • If the accident happens out side of city limits, drivers can report it online by clicking the link below or at the Colorado State Patrol office (554 Jurassic Court) in Fruita
  • GJPD issued the alert at 8 a.m. Monday, and it will continue until further notice since rainfall/snowfall is expected to continue throughout the day.
