AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) The Air Force Academy says it will cut 99 jobs and eliminate 10 academic majors as the Defense Department reduces overall spending.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reported Tuesday the number of cadets won't be reduced, and all the school's sports survived.

The job cuts include a third of the sergeants who oversee military training and cadet discipline, and 29 positions in academics.

The academy says about half the positions being eliminated are already vacant. The school currently has about 3,000 positions in all areas.

Academic majors being eliminated include biochemistry, environmental engineering and meteorology. The school will still offer 23 majors.

Brig. Gen. Andy Armacost, the dean of faculty, says the majors being cut traditionally have low enrollment. He says the changes affect about 100 cadets per year.
