GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - You might have seen an abundance of red today.

People wearing the bold color are honoring American Heart Month, specifically Go Red for Women day.

Today starts the month long dedication to spread awareness about the risks of heart problems.

Heart disease is the number one killer in America, so doctors are trying to get tips out, for a healthier heart.

"Eat a healthy diet of course, exercise regularly, and probably most important and one of the most simple things people can do is maintain a healthy weight," said Doctor Ross Pacini.

Doctors also encourage knowing what your blood pressure runs, what your cholesterol is and to have a decent idea of your body mass index.

Since the disease is so common, doctors say almost half of the people in this country will eventually die from heart disease.

The key is to be pro-active and know your risks.
