Aspen man killed in head-on motorcycle crash

PITKIN COUNTY, Colo. A 53-year-old Aspen man died Saturday night in a head-on crash on Highway 82 near Basalt.

This is still an active investigation, but preliminary results suggest that just before 5:00 p.m., 88-year-old John Walls of Carbondale was driving his Ford Focus on Highway 82 - when he ended up driving eastbound in the westbound lanes.

Walls' then struck a Ducati motorcycle head-on in the left lane of westbound Highway 82. The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead on-scene. His name is being held pending notice of his family.

Walls was transported to Valley View hospital in Glenwood Springs with minor injuries, and he was also placed under arrest and booked into the Pitkin County jail for careless driving caused death, with additional charges pending.
