Grand Junction, Colo (KKCO) --- Back to school shopping is starting early this year as many schools in the area are cutting summer vacation short.

According to the US Census Bureau, Americans spent $8.5 billion at clothing stores last August and Mesa Mall customers contributed to that number.

The mall sees a big boost in sales as this is the second busiest shopping time right behind the holidays.

Mesa Mall Marketing Director, Chelsi Reimer, said people come from as far as Utah to buy back to school clothes and supplies from the mall.

The best deals to find are in the clearance sections of stores as summer clothes are put there to make room for fall apparel, however with schools starting in the middle of summer, warm weather clothes will still be a necessity.
