GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Math, science and reading are important subjects for students to learn, but what about bike 101...some students had a hands-on lesson for bike safety today.

The warmer months are around the corner and school zones won't be the only place you'll find kids near the street. Soon they'll be zooming all over on their bikes and drivers need to be extra careful- just like the kids are.

Joeleonna Lopez was eager to learn how to ride a bike today.

Chipeta Elementary participated in an outdoor bike rodeo course where dozens of students were able to learn bike safety tips. Some even learned to ride for the first time.

“It was a little hard, but I did okay," said Lopez.

Elizabeth Collins, of Grand Valley Bikes, was there to teach students a number of important lessons.

“How to do it safely, along our roadways, on sidewalks...what to be concerned about," explains Collins.

They learned the rules of the roadway; hand signals, helmet use, proper helmet fit and how to do a quick bike check before hopping on and taking off. Wearing a helmet is the biggest key to bike safety and Collins stresses the importance that parents lead by example.

“We're really trying to instill as many parents and adults to be wearing their helmets as well," says Collins.

It was a great event all around and kids, like Griffin Bendowski, brushed up on their A-B-C's of biking.

“Check your air in your tire, “B” is brakes, “C” is the chain and quick check is check the bolts and yourself," explained Bendowski.

For first timers like Joeleonna, her bike lesson has given her the courage to put into practice what she learned.

“Good, confident," said Lopez.

Chipeta Elementary School has a program where students who do well in school can enter a raffle to win a bike and helmet.

If you're looking to learn more about biking, this Saturday, Grand Valley Bikes is having a bicycle rodeo course, at the Mog Fest downtown, which will be open to parents and kids.
