WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CNN) -- A Colorado Mesa University student is accused of plotting to kill President Barack Obama, shoot children, and kill innocent people on Halloween.

Now, 20-year-old Mitch Kusick from Westminster is facing federal charges. The threat to the president alone is punishable by five to ten years in prison.

Tuesday, Kusick appeared at a federal courthouse, accused of threatening the life of the president. But Obama was not Kusick's only alleged target.

According to the complaint, Kusick "was looking for somewhere there would be a lot of people present and he could have the biggest impact."

And so he planned to come to Standley Lake High School and a Halloween trick or treat event on Oct. 30.

Kusick told authorities he planned to bring a shot gun to the event where hundreds of children were present.

He said "that he would continue shooting children and hopefully draw police officers into a gun fight."

But Kusick had problems getting ammunition from a local Wal-Mart.

According to the complaint, the day before the event, he broke in to his aunt and uncle's home Westminster home and stole a gun. The next morning they confronted him and took him to his therapist's office.

That's where he allegedly confessed to an obsession with James Holmes, Columbine, Jessica Ridgeway’s murder and also killing the president.

The complaint says Kusick "wanted to go down in history as the guy who killed Obama.” He wanted to unfold his plan Nov. 1 at a rally in Boulder.

Instead his therapist Corey Candelaria called police, who confined Kusick on a mental health hold at Lutheran Hospital.

There Kusick allegedly told authorities he was angry because he couldn't get a congressional recommendation to attend West Point - his dream, though it is unclear whether that was his motive for the planned massacre that would have killed countless children and a nation's president.

According to his face book page, Kusick was studying nursing at CMU. He also appears on the 2011-2012 roster for the Maverick's ski team.
