GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – A statewide Special Olympics event will be coming to the Western Slope for the first time since its start in 1969.
Colorado Mesa University will host the 2013 State Summer Games, the largest Special Olympics sporting competition of the year.
The event will bring more than 1,100 athletes, 400 volunteers and many families and sponsors to our area on the first weekend of June 2013.
Spectators will see five sports in action: aquatics, gymnastics, track and field, soccer and powerlifting. The activities will be spread across El Pomar Natatorium, Maverick Center Gymnasium, Stocker Stadium, outdoor practice fields and the CMU Performing Arts Theatre.
On Saturday, the university will also hold a Victory Celebration which includes a dance and fireworks. All events and competitions are free and open to the public.
CMU credits the work and support of The Colorado Trust and the Monfort Family Foundation for getting the games to the Grand Junction campus.
