GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Colorado's gift to the U.S. Capitol hails from right here on the Western Slope, and today, a soon-to-be-famous tree is making a stop in Grand Junction.

Mayor Bill Pitts says it's an honor for the City of Grand Junction to be part of the U.S. Capitol tree and hopes the community will use this opportunity to encourage people to go outdoors and around their home town.

If you'd like to be part of this historic trip, the tree-- originally from Meeker-- will be in the Mesa Mall parking lot today outside of Cabela's from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It's free to stop by, and all are welcome.

The 73-foot Engelmann spruce comes from the Blanco Ranger District of the White River National Forest near Meeker.

Colorado kids, including some here in Grand Junction, created more than 5,000 ornaments to decorate the tree once it gets to Washington, D.C. But it has quite a few more stops to make before it gets there.

After today's event, the tree heads to Montrose for the next stop along its journey. In all, it will have gone through 28 cities across the country. You can track the tree's progress yourself by clicking the link below under Related Links.
