City Council votes yes on transportation payment increase

Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) – Several business owners expressed disappointment Wednesday night at the city council meeting. They said they were unhappy with the way city council voted on a transportation capacity payment increase.

The TCP amendment passed on a 4 to 3 vote. It increases the fee new businesses pay from 25 percent to 37 percent over the next three years. This fee is to help cover costs that will help maintain roads near businesses because of the extra traffic the businesses bring in. The increase in fees will help balance what taxpayers pay with the rates the businesses pay.

The increase starts on April 1 of this year with a 4 percent bump.

Council member Laura Luke wants the people to know that if changes need to be made in the future, they can be made. Luke did vote for the motion to pass. She also said it was a tough decision and one council has been looking at for a long time, expressing that this city council is pro business, but that they also have to think of those who don’t have a business.

Business owners such as Greg Motz, president of Sun King Corporation, said he was disappointed in the vote. He thinks council should have taken more time before passing the increase.

This is a poorly written story. It indicates 25% to 37% but fails to say of what! The reality is that the fee will increase 48% in three years (37/25). The fee will only be paid initially by the developer. The cost will be passed on in the cost of the products sold by the affected business. That means you and I will all be paying for it, one way or another. Our economy is not strong enough to support additional fees or taxes. This will stop at least one project that was coming to the city.

These weak people have the guts to raise our taxes again but cant be leaders on the Brady issue. But this vote will certainly kill the Brady development. This TAX increase will add another $150,000 to $200,000 the Bradys cost of developing that River Land.
