Mesa County Valley School District 51 sent this note via their facebook page (and other means) to all in the school community at this difficult time. It outlines what parents should do if their students need extra support.

Dear School District 51 Community,

Our sincerest condolences go out to all the victims, families, and school staff members affected by the heart-breaking tragedy this morning, Dec. 14, in Newtown, Connecticut.

Please know that our top priority in District 51 is student and staff safety. We are working with local law enforcement to increase visibility and awareness of security support around our schools. Our staff are trained on safety policies and procedures. We have spent the day working to ensure all schools are adhering to established safety protocols, reinforcing that safety procedures are being followed.

If your child is struggling with the news of the school shooting in Newton, CT, please also know that we have crisis counseling services available at your request. Please contact your school's main office if you have any questions about counseling services or security procedures.

We urge our community to be vigilant today and every day around student and school safety. If community members, staff or students see something suspicious or concerning at any time, you are encouraged to contact school or local law enforcement officials.

We join with all educators, parents, and Americans who are devastated by this senseless tragedy and mourning the loss of so many young lives.

Sincerely,
Steve Schultz, Superintendent

Wow , what a bunch of worthless lip service. Remember district 51 cares so much for your child’s safety; they dumped them on the street to make their way back and forth to school, on their own, including the kindergarteners. So they can live the exuberant life style, and not take a pay cut. Oh boy do they care.
