GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The Downtown Development Authority is putting phase one of the Avalon Theatre's construction plan into motion.
General Manager of the Avalon, Theron LaFountain, says the plan is to create a "more modern" space that will attract and accommodate a larger, regional audience. He says, so "people want to bring their conventions here, they want to come downtown if they're local. We're taking the Avalon to the next level, which is becoming a more regional performing arts center."
Phase one is mostly about upgrading the amenities. Currently, there is only one unisex, handicap-accessible bathroom on the main floor. New bathroom stalls will be added, as well as more baby-changing stations.
The concession stand will be moved to a new entrance on 7th Street, and an elevator will be installed.
Construction of the first phase is expected to wrap by August 2013. It is estimated to cost $3 million, and will be paid for by the Downtown Development Authority.
The Avalon Theatre is expanding it's menu beginning this weekend. Patrons will be able to buy a cheese plate and a glass of locally-produced wine for $10.
During spring break, they'll feature Hero-Mania. Each weekday, the theater will show a Marvel Comic movie, including Thor, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Spider-Man. A ticket for the entire package will cost $20, or $5 per movie.
