DUI crackdown extends through Thanksgiving weekend

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- This Thanksgiving, if you plan on gobbling up some alcoholic beverages, don’t get behind the wheel.

Colorado State Patrol and CDOT are partnering with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for what they call a "red ribbon campaign" to crack down on DUIs this holiday season.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Safety, Colorado saw seven crashes involving seven fatalities last Thanksgiving during the DUI enforcement period. Four of those deaths were alcohol related. Last year, 453 people were arrested for drinking and driving during the same time period.

That's why they're reinstating their holiday "Heat Is On" campaign this week, through Monday, Nov. 26.

MADD asks that if you plan on celebrating with alcohol, plan ahead for a sober ride home, either by designating a driver or calling a taxi service.

Just weeks ago, a similar crackdown for Halloween resulted in 570 DUI arrests across the state.
