Delta student brings loaded gun to school

DELTA, Colo. (KKCO) -- Delta police are emphasizing the importance of gun locks after a middle school student brings a gun on campus.

Delta Middle School officials called police on March 13 at 12:30 p.m. when they heard a loaded handgun had been brought to school, according to Delta Police Public Information Officer Jamie Head.

During their investigation, officers found the handgun in an area off school property and placed the young student --who they say was cooperative-- into protective custody.

Head says no students were threatened with the gun, nor was anyone injured. After the incident, the Delta Police Department issued a child abuse summons to the handgun's owner, whose name has not been released.

Delta Police Chief Robert Thomas now reminds people to keep their weapons in a gun safe or locked box, or keep them secure with a gun cable or safety lock.

"A tragic event or loss of life involving guns can be avoided if we work together as a community to make gun safety a priority in our home," Thomas said in a press release.

Locks are available at the Delta Police Department during regular business hours.
