GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) District 51 schools are cracking down on drug incidents. In the 2012-2013 school year, 41 middle and high school students were expelled for having controlled substances.
On a students first offense, they are suspended and sent to a counseling class to learn about the dangers of drugs. The second offense results in an expulsion.
School Resource Officers patrol the schools and are trained to detect the signs and symptoms of students that are under the influence.
Officer Bob Bomar caught a drunk student at the Fruita 8/9 School on the third day of school and said he is very watchful of suspicious behavior.
Education, prevention and enforcement are what officials are pushing in schools to deter kids from abusing drugs.
