February is National Dental Month

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - In addition to February being heart health month, it's also national dental month.

Oral disease is the most common health problem in small animals.

Veterinarians say bacteria in your pet's mouth not only causes bad breath, it also can cause heart disease, kidney disease and liver failure.

"Oral and dental health is important not just because of local disease that is Gingivitis and Periodontitis and tooth root abscesses, but also systemic ramifications as the dog ages," said Frank Coons, an associate veterinarian at Tiara Rado Animal Hospital.

Some ways to tell if your pet suffers from dental problems are if they avoid crunchy foods or no longer play with their chew toys as often.

Tiara Rado Animal Hospital is offering a discount on dental care this month in an effort to help more pet owners care for their furry friends.

And if you don't have a pet but want to open your home during this month of love; these cute puppies in the picture will be up for adoption with others at the Roice Hurst Humane Society in 2 weeks.
