Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) – A $15 million renovation has made the Wayne Aspinall Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse a model for solar energy projects across the country.

Wednesday afternoon, the building was rededicated after months of work. Renovation officials say the goal was to preserve the historical aspects of the building on the corner of 4th and Rood.

All this, while converting it into one of the most-energy efficient and sustainable historic buildings in the country.

"If we can achieve this here in Grand Junction it means we can start tackling some of the more difficult buildings in our inventory and you all become a model in how solar energy works,” says Susan Damour, with General Services Administration.

The building uses solar panels and high-efficiency lighting systems. It is the first net-zero building on the National Register of Historic Places. Work on the building was overseen by the General Services Administration.
