GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- You may have noticed firefighters hanging around your local City Market, Albertsons and Wal-Mart- they're out this weekend to raise money for a good cause.

Every year it's tradition around Labor Day Weekend for firefighters to conduct their annual 'Fill the Boot' fundraiser. It benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association and almost all of the proceeds support MDA patients right here on The Western Slope.

According to the CDC, the average cost of medical care for privately insured individuals with any type of Muscular Dystrophy, ranges from 18 to 32 thousand dollars annually. And fire officials say they enjoy making a difference in their community.

"It's really neat, it's very touching. We've seen a lot of these children ourselves that are in their wheelchairs and things like that. That we have actually helped raise the money that they used to purchase their wheel chairs with," said Derek Trombetta of the Grand Junction Fire Department.

Last year the Grand Junction Fire Department raised $11,000 and they say they hope to do the same this year.

If you didn't a chance to toss some money in the boot today, they say they'll be around tomorrow as well.
