Grand Junction, Colo (KKCO) --- After 19 firefighters lost their lives battling flames in Arizona, the fire community is mourning the tragedy.

The Hot Shot crew in Arizona used fire shelters as a last resort when the fire got too close for them to escape. Unfortunately, those shelters did not help them.

Also known as Shake and Bakes, they can withstand up to 500 degrees of heat before the glue that bonds the material together begins falling apart.

Firefighters have to go through training to use these shelters and be prepared for the worst situations even though it is very rare that they are used.

Officials at the local Mobilization Center at Grand Mesa Middle School said firefighters in all areas are ready to use them, but how they never have to.
